ONE LESS GUN: At about 2:51AM, on Monday, July 6, 2018, officers assigned to District B-2 (Roxbury), while on patrol in the area of Massachusetts Avenue and Gerard Street, observed a silver motor vehicle fail to make a complete stop at Melnea Cass Boulevard and Massachusetts Avenue. An inquiry of the motor vehicle’s license plate revealed there was no active registration. Coupled with the traffic infraction, officers activated their lights and sirens and conducted a traffic stop. While speaking to the driver, later identified as Tyrone Butler, 37 of Hyde Park, MA, officers learned that Mr. Butler was driving on a suspended Massachusetts drivers’ license. In light of that infraction, officers arrested Mr. Butler and charged him with Operating a Motor Vehicle on a Suspended License. Meantime, the passenger in the vehicle, later identified as Cory Gibbons, 37, of Randolph, MA, was observed placing a black bag onto the passenger side floor.
As such, Mr. Gibbons was asked to step out of the motor vehicle. As Mr. Gibbons was exiting the vehicle, officers were able to detect and smell a strong odor of alcohol on his breath. Given the arrest of the operator and Mr. Gibbon’s impaired condition, officers, for safety purposes, decided to tow the motor vehicle. During the motor vehicle inventory search, officers observed the black bag which Mr. Gibbons had placed on the floor. Upon closer inspection, officers immediately observed the silver handle of a firearm inside the bag. Officers confiscated the firearm described as a loaded Ruger LC9s with one live 9mm round in the chamber (See photo).
Corey Gibbons, the passenger, was charged with: Unlawful Possession of a Firearm, Unlawful Possession of a Loaded Firearm and Unlawful Possession of Ammunition.
