A driver who died in a collision with a snowplow truck at Denver International Airport has been identified as a United Airlines mechanic who was headed to work on the night shift.

James Raff, 65, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Denver medical examiner’s office. Raff died of blunt force injuries in the crash, which occurred during a snowstorm Wednesday night.

Raff was a longtime mechanic and aircraft inspector for United, a union representative confirmed.

The crash happened about 9 p.m. in the 11100 block of Queensburg Street on DIA property, according to police investigators.

Raff lost control of his pickup, and it slid into the snowplow, said Jay Casillas, a police spokesman. A spring snowstorm was blowing through the area at the time, and Raff likely was driving too fast for the conditions, with snow and ice on the road, Casillas said.

The plow driver was not injured. Investigators do not suspect drugs or alcohol were involved.
