In a Facebook post Monday night, Nailan Gonzalez, the wife of Rogel Lazaro Aguilera-Mederos, said her husband requested she post a message in his name.

“This is not fair what they are doing to me,” the post said in Spanish, “but I never thought that I would have a world out there supporting me.”

Aguilera-Mederos, a Texas resident, thanked his lawyers along with “those who have prayed and continue to pray for me.”

As of Tuesday morning, people around the country had raised $9,602 in his name. Multiple people expressed support for him in Facebook comments.

Jefferson County prosecutors have not formally filed charges against Aguilera-Mederos, who police say was going 85 miles per hour before colliding into stopped vehicles near Colorado Mills Parkway. He was arrested Friday on investigation of vehicular homicide charges and could face years in prison, even though there’s no evidence he was under the influence or that he intentionally caused the wreck that left four people dead and six seriously injured.

Rob Corry, Aguilera-Mederos’ lawyer, said Saturday that he believes the crash was caused by “some sort of malfunction” with the vehicle.

Aguilera-Mederos, who remains in jail on $400,000 bond, is scheduled to appear in court on Friday.
