The president of the Cherry Creek School District’s board of education issued an apology Wednesday for a “racist term” he used on stage at a teacher awards banquet.

David Willman, who was elected to the board in 2011, in the apology said when first confronted about using the undisclosed term on Tuesday night, he was defensive. But after reflection, he now understands “that my words were hurtful and damaging.”

“I am addressing my apology to all of you because, as board president, I represent the entire Cherry Creek School District community,” Willman said in the written statement. “I apologize to those in the room who heard me speak, but I also apologize to all of you, because my use of racist language at a school event does not reflect Cherry Creek values.”

Willman, in the statement, did not disclose the term he used. He could not be reached Wednesday night for comment.

Co-owner of a small health-and-wellness business, Willman has served on the Citizens’ Budget Advisory Committee in Aurora, according to a school district website. He’s also held volunteer positions on school accountability committees and parent, teacher and community organizations.

“I have high expectations for myself and for this organization, and I failed to meet those expectations,” he said in the statement. “I own my mistake and I apologize for it.”
