Crews respond to a flipped raft on the Eagle River on Thursday, June 6, 2019.

A person died in a rafting accident Thursday afternoon in the Eagle River near Vail.

Five people were in the private raft when it turned over, according to the Eagle County Sheriff’s Office. Four emerged from the river; the victim was found downstream near the Eaglebend Apartments in Avon.

Emergency workers pulled the victim from the river and performed CPR, the release stated. The rafter was rushed to a hospital but was pronounced dead. The victim’s name was not released.

Rivers and creeks in Eagle County are reaching peak flows, the sheriff’s office said, and rafters should take precautions, including wearing life jackets and protective headgear. River users should use appropriate craft for conditions and know the waters and rivers they’re using.
