A man suspected in the death of his wife in Frederick took his own life on the Peak to Peak Highway just north of Nederland, according to investigators.
Kevin Wayne Butler, 50, of Frederick, died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound in a vehicle at about 8 p.m. Friday, according to the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office. The vehicle then rolled forward and crashed into a tree at low speed.
A passerby was preforming CPR on Butler when deputies arrived on scene. The incident was initially believed to be a fatal motor vehicle crash.
The apparent suicide happened in the 39,000 block of Colorado 72 near Mud Lake, the sheriff’s office said Monday. The Boulder County Coroner will rule on the cause and manner of Butler’s death.
Emily Butler, 36, was found dead at about 3 p.m. Friday in the couple’s home in the 7100 block of Shavano Circle, according to Frederick police. She had been shot.
Kevin Butler was considered a “person of interest” in her death. The investigation is ongoing. The Boulder sheriff and the coroner’s office are working with Frederick police.
