The Marcellus Mini Movie Family Film Festival has already surprised many for the number and location of its entries. Now in its fourth year of operation, the community-based, “human-scale” festival garnered 123 entries, half of them from outside the US, including Iran, Afghanistan, China, and Australia. Submissions for the festival came from over 20 countries around the world, and from 7 local filmmakers.

“Despite the international submissions, I set it up to help local people make local films,” stated Lewis McCaffrey, Festival Director, and a Marcellus resident. “We ran a film school for teens in Marcellus this summer, and the film which emerged is amazing and slightly disturbing. But it’s local, and that’s what counts”. Marcellus residents make up the judging panel and have each watched a total of 14 hours of films, all of them 15 minutes or shorter. “The number and quality of films have increased over the last four years, and that means we can be more selective in the films we show. None of them are on Netflix,” emphasized McCaffrey, “but the films are so amazing that they might be in years to come.”

The free festival will be held at Marcellus Library on Saturday 16th November 2019. A final selection of 30 short films has been scheduled to be shown this year. The audience votes for which films win in eight categories, including Comedy, Animation, Environment, and the Marcellus Grand Prize.
