03-24-20 Kurtistown man and woman charged with burglary and other offenses

Hawaiʻi Island Police have charged a 23-year-old Kurtistown man and a 25-year-old Kurtistown woman with an array of offenses stemming from an active burglary call in Hawaiian Paradise Park on Friday morning (March 20).

On (March 20) at approximately 6:39 a.m. Puna Patrol officers responded to an active burglary call at a residence in Hawaiian Paradise Park in Keaʻau. It was reported that the victim woke up to a strange sound and, upon investigating, observed an unknown male within the driver’s seat of the victims running vehicle. The suspect exited this vehicle upon seeing the victim and entered the passenger side of the victim’s second vehicle, which was being operated by another party. It was discovered that the unknown suspect entered the victim’s residence and removed a backpack containing items of identification, keys to the victim’s vehicles, and other items. 

Upon doing area checks, officers located the occupied vehicle on 16th Avenue and attempted to stop the stolen vehicle. The vehicle was pursued before being called off due to public safety concerns. The vehicle was later observed with a female and a male party exiting it and running into the bushes.  After an extensive search, Jaeylyn Cordeiro and Kawika Buckland were located and arrested. 

Multiple forms of identification that were in the stolen backpack were found within the stolen vehicle.  A backpack observed on Buckland was recovered upon his arrest. Puna Patrol officers obtained and served a search warrant on the backpack and recovered the victim’s backpack and items. 

After conferring with prosecutors, Kawika Buckland was charged with Burglary of a dwelling during an emergency period, first-degree Burglary, Unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle, first-degree Theft, second-degree Theft, five counts of unauthorized possession of confidential personal information, five counts of Habitual Property Crime and third-degree Promotion of a dangerous drug.  His bail was set at $230,000.

Jaelyn Cordeiro was charged with Burglary of a dwelling during an emergency period, first-degree Burglary, Unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle, first-degree theft, two counts of Habitual Property Crime, Resisting an order to stop and Driving without a valid driver’s license. Her bail was set at $118,000.

Buckland and Cordeiro remain in police custody in lieu of bail. Their initial court appearance is scheduled for Monday (March 23) in Hilo District Court.
