What does a Transportation Inspector do? Transportation Inspectors work out of the Ports of Entry and Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV) inspection areas in the state. Their primary focus is to ensure safe and legal CMV Operations. They accomplish this through inspection and enforcement of state and federal CMV Regulations and traffic laws. They play a key part in detecting unsafe CMV drivers and unsafe CMV equipment. Transportation Inspectors have the authority to place a CMV and their drivers out of service for serious violations.
What makes a good Transportation Inspector? The ideal candidate will have good customer service and organizational skills. They can write summary reports and work in a high-volume job task setting within a law enforcement environment. Mechanical knowledge is helpful but not required. On the job training will be provided.
What are the minimum qualifications to be a Transportation Inspector? Candidates must have a high school diploma and one (1) year general work experience. They must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Driver's License and have no felony convictions. Within one year of hire, the candidate must complete the North American Standards CMV Inspector’s Certification.
