Today, October 23rd, 2020, at approximately 1:22 pm, the Kansas Highway Patrol (KHP) was involved in a shooting during a traffic stop near Independence, Kansas, in Montgomery County.
On October 23rd, the Kansas Highway Patrol received information regarding an armed robbery in Coffeyville, Kansas. A short time later, a Motor Carrier Inspector and a Trooper with the Kansas Highway Patrol located the suspect vehicle, occupied by a male and female, on 3600 Road, near Independence. Gunfire was exchanged during a pursuit and upon coming to a stop the male subject was pronounced dead at the scene.
The female driver was taken into custody for questioning. No KHP members were injured during the incident.
The Kansas Bureau of Investigation was asked to investigate the incident. As is standard practice, and in accordance with Kansas Highway Patrol policy, a law enforcement officer with the Kansas Highway Patrol will be placed on administrative leave while this case is being investigated by the Kansas Bureau of Investigation.
