About 4:25am on Saturday, January 2, 2021, officers assigned to District B-2 (Roxbury) made an on-site firearm arrest in the area of Humboldt Avenue and Howland Street, Roxbury.

Officers were assisting with a call for a ShotSpotter Activation in the area of 44 Quincy Street, when their attention was drawn to a group of individuals that were walking from the area. Officers watched as the group approached a motor vehicle parked on Holburn Street. Officers pulled alongside the vehicle when they observed a male, later identified as William Edwards, 30 years old from Brockton, attempting to enter the passenger side of the vehicle, which was already occupied. As the officers spoke with Edwards, they observed him attempt to conceal the left side of his body against the vehicle. As the officers pointed out that the passenger seat was already occupied, Edwards closed the door and walked backwards and entered the rear passenger side, while still concealing his left side against the vehicle.

A query of the motor vehicle revealed that it had a failed inspection sticker. As the officers circled back around, they watched as the vehicle pulled out onto Holborn Street. As the officers were behind the vehicle, they observed the operator fail to stop for a stop sign at the intersection of Wabon and Wabeno Streets. Officers then conducted a traffic stop for both the inspection sticker and stop sign violations.

As officers approached, Edwards immediately identified himself as the owner. While speaking with Edwards, officers observed a tire iron resting on the seat next to him. At this time, all four occupants were instructed to exit the vehicle. Upon further investigation, officers located a firearm underneath the front passenger seat. The firearm, a Ruger 380, was loaded with (1) round in the chamber, and (5) rounds in the magazine.

The operator of the vehicle was issued a MA Uniform Citation for Failure to Stop for a Stop Sign, as well as Operating a Motor Vehicle with a Failed Inspection Sticker.

William Edwards was arrested and charged with Unlawful Possession of a Firearm, Carrying a Loaded Firearm without a License, and Possession of Ammunition without an FID Card. Edwards was also issued a MA Uniform Citation for Allowing the Operation of a Motor Vehicle with a Failed Inspection Sticker. Edwards is expected to be arraigned in Roxbury District Court.

The two other occupants of the vehicle were identified and later released.
