About 9:14pm on Wednesday, February 3, 2021, officers assigned to District B-3 (Mattapan) made an on-site firearm arrest in the area of Brinsley Street and Columbia Road, Dorchester.
While on patrol in the area of Morse Street, officers observed a motor vehicle stop at the intersection of Brinsley Street and Washington Street, then accelerate at a high rate of speed on the wrong side of Washington Street, before turning onto Morse Street. Officers attempted to stop the vehicle, but the vehicle continued at a high rate of speed down Brinsley Street going the wrong way out towards Geneva Avenue.
Additional officers were canvassing the area when they observed a motor vehicle make a U-turn and travel at an extremely high rate of speed away from them. The officers were unable to stop the vehicle due to its high rate of speed. As the officers attempted to catch up to the vehicle, they observed it turn left from Columbia Road onto Geneva Avenue, failing to stop for a red arrow. The vehicle then lost control and struck a traffic light pole.
As officers approached the vehicle, the driver, later identified as Joel Skyers, 22 of Boston, exited the driver’s seat in an attempt to flee. Officers ordered Skyers to the ground, where he was secured.
The passenger, later identified as Reynoldo Simmonds, 22 of Boston, exited the vehicle while holding his right front sweatshirt pocket. Simmonds ran up Brinsley Street, where officers briefly lost sight of him. The officers regained sight of Simmonds walking at the corner of Brinsley Street and Washington Street. After a brief struggle, Simmonds was secured.
A canvass of Simmonds flight path revealed a firearm in the driveway of 7 Brinsley Street. The firearm, a Glock 17, was loaded with (17) rounds of ammunition in the magazine and (1) round in the chamber.
Both suspects were placed under arrest and transported to B-3 for booking, where they reported no injuries.
The operator, Joel Skyers, was arrested and charged with Negligent Operation of a Motor Vehicle, Leaving the Scene of an Accident, Speed Greater than Reasonable and Failure to Stop at a Red Light. Skyers was also issued a MA Uniform Citation.
Reynoldo Simmonds was arrested and charged with Unlawful Possession of a Firearm, Carrying a Loaded Firearm, Unlawful Possession of Ammunition, and Possession of a Large Capacity Feeding Device.
Both suspects are expected to be arraigned in Dorchester District Court.
