BPD Remembers the Service and Sacrifice of Det. Sherman Griffiths Killed in the Line of Duty on this day 33 Years Ago: On this day 33 years ago, February 18, 1988, Det. Sherman Griffiths was shot and killed in the line of duty protecting and serving the citizens of our fine city. Detective Griffiths was shot and killed while serving a search warrant, with other officers assigned to the Drug Control Unit, targeting illegal narcotics at 104 Bellevue Street in Dorchester at about 8:00pm, Wednesday, February 18, 1988. As Detective Griffiths attempted to gain entry to a third-floor apartment, shots rang out from inside the location striking Detective Griffiths. Sadly, he would succumb to his injuries the next morning.

An 8-year-veteran of the department, Sherman was 36-years-old at the time of his death. Making his death ever more tragic is the fact that he left behind and was survived by his wife and two daughters, 4-year-old Melanie and 6-year-old Hilary.

On the day of his funeral, over 4500 law enforcement officers from around the region travelled to St. Agatha’s Church in Milton to pay their final respects. Detective Griffiths was laid to rest at the Milton Cemetery in Milton. Following his death, five of his brothers would join the Boston Police Department as police officers.

To forever honor his sacrifice, Sherman’s name can be found and is forever imprinted on the National Law Enforcement Memorial (https://nleomf.org/memorial) in our nation’s capital on Panel 15, East Line 9. His name can also be found on the BPD’s Hero Wall at Boston Police Headquarters and the Massachusetts State Law Enforcement Memorial located on the lawn of the Massachusetts State House in Boston.

In Boston, a Hero Sign (see photo) is posted at the corner of Moraine Street and South Huntington Ave in Jamaica Plain to forever honor the memory of a brave man who gave his life in service to his city. If you’re in the area, keep an eye out for his Hero Sign and kindly take a moment, not only to honor his sacrifice, but to remember the loved ones left in mourning after his tragic passing 33 years ago.
