On Tuesday October 26, 2021, Boston Police 911 call-taker Emelyn Perez was recognized for her actions following a call from a boater in distress near Deer Island in the Boston Harbor. The initial call-taker had difficulty understanding the caller due to a language barrier. Ms. Perez, who is fluent in the caller’s language, immediately took over the call and was able to ascertain pertinent information from the caller as his boat rapidly took on water and began to sink.
Ms. Perez’s skillful and patient interpretation of the information as it was being relayed over the course of twenty tense minutes, leading to a response from numerous marine units and ultimately, the victim’s safe rescue.
Emelyn’s actions exemplify the level of service and professionalism all of our 911 call-takers and dispatchers provide to the public every day.
